Mercury Switches

Mercury Containing Auto Switches

Many vehicles made between 1970 and 1995 contained mercury switches.  Auto switches may be the nation’s largest source of mercury contamination from manufacturing.  One mercury switch can badly contaminate a 20 acre lake.  Auto recyclers in Washington have been working with the Department of Ecology to remove these switches since 2006.  autoswitchSo far, recyclers have removed over 120,000 of these switches.

Participating auto recyclers are reimbursed $3.00 per light switch and $9.00 per ABS sensor. Free collection buckets, transportation, and disposal are provided for the switches.   The links below offer more information.
